As we reach the beginning of October, leaf-peeping season is in full swing and it is the perfect time for a fall hike. We encourage everyone to get outside and enjoy what each season has to offer. Although, we advise everyone to be prepared and stay protected. Even though the temperature drops, the damage UV rays can cause does not. This is why we put together some helpful fall hiking tips- some may be more obvious, and some more interesting.

 1. Be prepared. Pack enough supplies appropriate to the trip.

Be aware of how long your hike will be, what season it is, what the weather is going to be like, what the existing conditions are, and what time the sun rises/sets. If the trail conditions seem to be wet from previous storms, or there is some rain on the horizon, pack extra socks to change into. Think about waterproofing your bag. Put any valuables or things you may not want to get wet into plastic bags inside of your backpacks.

2. The sun still shines in the fall. Protect your skin.

The heat may be gone, but the UV rays can still cause damage to your skin. UV exposure increases by 10% every 1,000 feet above sea level. Pick a sunscreen that you are going to have room in your bag or pocket for. Demratone’s Sunscreen Lotions come in 3 oz travel size packaging, perfect for on the go. If the conditions are particularly cold and windy opt for Advanced Therapy Skin Protector Balm aka Dermatone’s Classic Tin, which moisturizes both lips and face, and protects from sun, wind, cold, and even frostbite. It is also water-free, so you do not have to worry about it freezing in the colder months.

3. Make sure to reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours.

Pack a travel size skin protectant in a small pocket to have it easily accessible to reapply on the trail. Dermatone offers a hands-free Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 50, which can be ready to take out whenever you need.

 4. Don’t forget your lips!

As you hike to higher elevations, your body becomes more exposed to the elements. Protect your lips from chapping, cracking, and UV damage with a SPF lip balm. Dermatone even has a Medicated Lip Balm with SPF30 that is uniquely formulated to protect, condition, moisturize, and heal your lips, while providing long-lasting performance. Dermatone lip balms can even be used on other parts of your body in a pinch!

5. Protect your valuables.

Secure your valuables in safe places. Find a pouch with a zipper where you can safely stow away your items. Place your phone or wallet in a plastic bag to protect from water damage. Attach a cork to your car keys. A cork is buoyant and will float if you are hiking near bodies of water!

6. Dermatone is not just for your skin, it can be used as a fire starter!

One of our more nontraditional tips is when in a pinch, Dermatone can be used as a fire igniter! Gently rub some Dermatone product on some kindling in a protected fire pit and ignite a flame. Dermatone should aid in the fire starting process and eliminate the time it takes to produce a wonderful fire to sit around with friends. Take necessary precautions and have enough water ready to put out your fire.

7. If it’s getting dark, use a flashlight and a water bottle to create a lantern!

If you find it takes a bit longer to hike the trail, take a flashlight and shine it underneath a transparent water bottle to act as a lantern. This will help you savor the daylight and find your way out of the woods as you complete your hike.

8. After a long wet hike, ball up newspaper and stuff it in your hiking boots to soak up the water!

If you plan on hiking the following day and need your boots to dry quickly, grab some old newspaper to soak up the water. Ball up the newspaper and place it onto the soles of the boots. Leave overnight and remove in the morning.

9. Leave no trace!

Leave the trail the way you found it. Make sure you take your Dermatone home with you! You’ll need it all year round. Bring a plastic bag to use as a garbage bag and carry out everything you carried in. Stay on the marked path to avoid any unnecessary erosion of nature. Do not disturb any of the animals in their natural habitats. You wouldn’t want to be woken up from a nap either.
